Suspect dead, 10 others injured after an attack at the Bridge River Indian Band office

The Bridge River Indian Band confirms several staff members have been attacked at the Xwisten office near Lillooet. Four have been hospitalized and two are in serious condition. Chief Susan James told CFJC describes the incident as tragic and says the community is in shock. She says the suspect is a band member though the motive of the attack is unknown.

The Independent Investigations Office has been deployed to Lillooet after an in custody death. In a release the IIO states before 8:30 this morning (Wednesday) RCMP were called to the Bridge River Indian Band office after reports that a male entered the building using weapons and allegedly assaulted three people. Prior to police attendance the suspect was subdued and restrained. When police responded the suspect was restrained and subdued. Police arrested the male but were unable to transport him as he became unconscious. Officers on scene preformed CPR but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. The IIO will investigate the actions of the officers, speak with witnesses and collect evidence.

Interior health has confirmed they provided care to 10 patients. Two are in critical care, two are in serious condition and 6 suffered no life threatening injuries. There has been no word on what provoked the attack.
