The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team is entering its Christmas break on a high.

The WolfPack swept the visiting University of Fraser Valley Cascades in two straight Canada West regular season games at the Warner Rentals Court. On Saturday (Nov 28), the score was 80-59.
Thompson Rivers raises its record to 6-2. Fraser Valley falls to 4-4.

TRU led from wire to wire at the Tournament Capital Centre: 19-12 after the first quarter and up 42-25 at the half.

“I thought we were very good in the first half, “said WolfPack assistant coach Chuck Ferguson. “They made it tougher for us in the second. These were huge games for us this weekend. To be in a hunt for 1-2, that means we are right there with MacEwan in the battle for top spot. I thought the girls looked really good tonight. We really shot the ball well. We haven’t done that for a while. I like where we stand going into the Christmas break at 6-2.”
The WolfPack forced the Cascades to turn over the ball 22 times in the contest.

“Not a good game for us tonight,” stated Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer. “I really thought we would come out and take a step forward. Turnovers were an issue. Most of them were unforced. Thompson Rivers had us on our heels all night long.”

Tuchscherer thought the result could coincide with the number of new faces he has on his roster. “It might. It is a learning process for us. You would think after last night and a really good video session this morning we would have learned some things. It wasn’t the case. A very disappointing effort for us tonight.”

TRU was led by Emma Piggin (2nd year, guard, Kamloops, BC) who had 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Michelle Bos (2nd year, guard, Surrey, BC) was named the TRU Bookstore/McDonalds “Leader of the Pack” player of the game. She had 13 points and six rebounds. “I thought Michelle played excellent defense the entire weekend,” Ferguson added.

Other WolfPack players in double digits on offense were Kassie Colonna (4th year, forward, Inver mere, BC) and Sarah Malate (5th year, guard, Calgary, AB) with 11 points.

Ferguson liked his team’s discipline. “I thought Emma Piggin has really come into her own. She has embraced the leadership role. We were hoping she would do that. It adds a ‘rudder to the ship’. We are working towards our goals.”

Fraser Valley had two players in double figures: Taylor Claggett (1st year, forward, Mission, BC) had 20 points and nine rebounds. Kayli Satori (4th year, forward, Abbotsford, BC) added 14 points.

Both teams now go on their Christmas break.

TRU will host the SAIT Trojans of Calgary, Alberta (ACAC) on New Year’s Eve in an exhibition game. They return to Canada West play Friday, January 8, 2016 in Kelowna against the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat. Their next home game is Friday, January 22nd at the Tournament Capital Centre when they entertain the Mount Royal University Cougars. Tip off will be 6 pm.
