WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The BC RCMP has confirmed two people lost their lives in a three-vehicle crash approximately 20 kilometres north of Williams Lake Monday (Sept. 24).

Media Relations Officer Cst. Mike Halskov says it happened at around 3:00 p.m. on Highway 97.

“Upon arrival, it was determined that a southbound pickup with a lone driver crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound Toyota with a family of five and then sideswiped another vehicle that was following the Toyota,” he says.

“Sad to report that the driver of the Toyota and the nine year old child sitting in the backseat have died as a result of this collision.”

Halskov says the other three occupants of the Toyota — an adult and two children — were taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. He adds the driver of the sideswiped vehicle suffered minor injuries while the driver of the southbound pickup that crossed the centre line received significant injuries.

He says the Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Traffic Services out of Williams Lake has assumed conduct of this file with assistance from North District Collision Analysts and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners Service and WorkSafe BC.

“At this early stage of the investigation it appears impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash,” says Halskov, who encourages any witnesses to call Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services at (250) 392-6211.

He says the family in the Toyota are from northern B.C.

The crash closed the highway in both directions for several hours.
