KAMLOOPS — Day one of the National College Baseball Championships wasn’t one to remember for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.

The Pack are representing Western Canada at this event. They dropped both of their round robin games on Thursday (Oct 25).

In the first game, TRU were on the short end of an 8-2 decision to the Fanshawe Falcons on Ontario.  They then immediately took on the defending Ontario Collegiate Athletic Conference champion St Clair Saints and fell 1-0.

The first game went five innings while the second went six as the round robin games are on two hour time limit.

Jackson Dartnell (Winnipeg, MB) was tagged with the loss in the Fanshawe game. He was the second of five pitchers that head coach Ray Chadwick utilized.   Dartnell gave up a hit, two runs and walked three in his time on the mound.

He replaced starter Tyler Hodder (Fort McMurray, AB) who went three innings giving up a hit, a run and striking out three.

Offensively, Thompson Rivers was led by Liam Shibata who went three for three. Shibata was named the player of the game for the WolfPack, who gave up a run in the first, two in the fourth and five in the fifth inning.

The game with St. Clair was a pitcher duel featuring Tyler Moskalyk (Thunder Bay, ON) of the WolfPack and Evan Ferguson of St. Clair. Moskalyk pitched six innings, striking out six and giving up one run.   Ferguson went seven innings surrendering two hits, struck out six and walked two.

Shibata and Zac Comeault (Maple Ridge, BC) were the only TRU players to get a hit.

The WolfPack don’t play again until Friday  at 10 am EST against the second seed from the other division.

That other division has the Holland Hurricanes of PEI, the Ahuntsic Indians of Quebec and the host Humber Hawks in it.

The championships wrap up on Saturday (Oct27),
