Merritt RCMP make arrest in connection to church fires

MERRITT, B.C. — Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection to a number of church fires in the Merritt area.

Last week, the Murray United Church on the Nicola Ranch near Merritt was completely destroyed by fire. It was the oldest building in the Nicola Valley.

The Crossroads Community Church was also damaged, as well as two churches on the Lower Nicola reserve.

Merritt RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore says it’s still early in the investigation, but officers did receive information that led to a search warrant being executed on a home. They made the arrest yesterday afternoon (Jan. 18).
