Rockets bump Blazers in OT

KELOWNA – Despite a valiant effort, the Kamloops Blazers weren’t able to earn a win against the rival Rockets in Kelowna Saturday night, falling 2-1 in overtime.

15-year old Blazers rookie Logan Stankoven saw WHL action on consecutive nights for the first time in his career, going head-to-head with fellow 2018 first round draft pick Trevor Wong. It was Wong who opened the scoring with his first-ever WHL goal, coming at the 3:25 mark of the 3rd period, banging a rebound past Blazers G Dylan Ferguson for a power play tally.

Jermaine Loewen would continue his strong play of late, notching his fourth goal in the past six games just 4:04 after Wong scored, to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The score remained tied at the end of regulation, so the teams went to overtime. With Connor Zary in the penalty box for interference, Rockets d-man Lassi Thompson would end it on a 4-on-3 man advantage for Kelowna.

Ferguson stopped 22 of 24 shots he faced in the contest, while the Rockets Roman Basran bade 17 saves on 18 shots.

The single point moved the Blazers a point ahead of Seattle in the Western Conference Wild Card Race and puts them just two behind the Rockets for 3rd in the BC Division. The Blazers next three games will be played at the Sandman Centre, starting on Friday, Feb 8th when they host the Vancouver Giants.
