City crews locate water main break that impacted downtown

KAMLOOPS — A water main break that caused a massive flow of water through downtown Kamloops has now been located.

In a news release, the City of Kamloops says crews worked throughout the evening to isolate the break between Ponderosa Lodge and Front Counter BC off Columbia Street.

Heavy frost hampered efforts last night making excavation difficult, but at roughly 8:30 a.m. today (Feb. 8), crews located the break and are now removing and replacing the pipe.

At this time, Glenfair Estates remains without water and nearby BC Government offices have shut down for the day.

Last night, the water from the break poured down Columbia Street, and 3rd and 4th Avenues. City streets crews managed the freezing water throughout the evening and crews remain on site to keep the roads as clear as possible. Drivers are asked to travel with caution in the area.

Another water main break occurred on Greenstone Drive between Bestwick Drive and Pyramid Court, with 20 homes impacted. Crews are currently locating and repairing this break.

The shutdown of the break is resulting in periodic water service interruptions to the area today.

Both breaks are likely the result of the recent extreme cold weather. The City estimates both water main breaks to be resolved by the end of today.
