KAMLOOPS — Less than a month after Gateway Casinos announced its acquisition of Chances Casino on the Kamloops North Shore, Chances employees have voted to unionize.

According to the website for Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, Chances employees voted 91 per cent in favour of joining Unifor.

The vote means Unifor will represent 94 gaming, security, bingo callers and other workers at the Halston Avenue business.

Unifor says it represents more than 20,000 hospitality and gaming workers across Canada.

Last year, Gateway Casinos and members of the BC Government Employees Union locked horns in a protracted labour dispute.

More than 650 BCGEU members walked picket lines for four months in Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton and at Cascades Casino in Kamloops.

The union had alleged Gateway was refusing to pay its members a living wage.

A deal was announced on November 1.
