BRITISH COLUMBIA —  Health officials are investigating an outbreak of salmonella in six provinces, including B.C, where the bacteria has sickened 23 people.

The Public Health Agency says 63 people have become ill across the country, including 10 each in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, eight in Saskatchewan and two in Quebec — though there haven’t been any food recalls.

Two people have died in Winnipeg, but officials say they haven’t yet determined if salmonella was a contributing factor.

The bacteria causes intestinal illness, and is typically transmitted by eating contaminated food that hasn’t been cooked enough or by people who didn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom.
